Well done Jack! Aberdour junior member Jack Small was playing in the British Championship at St Andrew’s this weekend. Jacks is only 8 years old and is putting his golf to the test against the UK’s finest young golfers. Jack's Dad Steven gave us some info from his day; "Relieved to have got through today! It's been a long one. Jack decided to get us up at 6:00am and he wasn't on the tee until 10:50am... The standard is really high this year. 36 of the best 7 and 8 year olds from across Scotland, England, Wales and N.Ireland. Jack did well to get through qualifying via Carnoustie and Gleneagles, coming second in the Scottish North & East Regional Final. Wee Wonders is considered the unofficial British Championship for kids aged 12 and under and there has been a few famous faces playing in it over the years (Matt Fitzpatrick, Tyrell Hatton, Charlie Hull etc). Drawn with Jaxson Perry from Bristol, last year's European Champion, top three at the World Championship at Pinehurst, and Joel Hall from Nottingham, second at the US Kids British Championship down at Celtic Manor last month. They're playing nine holes at the Balgove St. Andrews, twice on Saturday, and again tomorrow. Disappointing morning round. The standard in our group was so good that Jack was putting a lot of pressure on himself to keep up. Kids have to make all the decisions for themselves, the wind was up, making it a very different course from our practice round on Friday night. A lot of wrong club selections, but Jack scrambled well and scored a 38, his best start in the three years he's made the Grand Final. Jumped up the leaderboard to 17th after a really great 32 this afternoon (the best score of the day was 29). Holed a monster putt to birdie the longest hole on the course (if it hadn't gone in it would have been 20ft past the hole...). Chipping and putting well, though I sometimes wonder whether he thinks he's in a speed gold competition - no hanging around. The final round is tomorrow morning, kids playing in reverse order based on their position on the leaderboard, so should be with kids of a similar standard. Forgot to pack snorkels and flippers... I've heard it's going to be a wet one, so scoring might be tough. Main thing is he's having fun, making lots of new friends, and showing the rest of the UK that kids from Fife can floss dance faster than anyone." Jack finished in 10th place a great effort. |
