Firstly I’d like to start by wishing all members and staff a very happy Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year, news of the vaccine has lifted us all so let’s hope that we can get back to some sort of normality soon in the not too distant future. This last year has been very trying for us therefore I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the tremendous support they have given me and the club during this difficult time. The shop and sale will be open right up to Christmas in case you’re looking for a last minute gift or voucher.

It is vitally important that we continue to adhere to all the safety measures laid down by the club for the present time so that we can look forward to the new safer season for us all.

The pro shop has seen some changes lately and I would like to thank John and Pam for their great efforts in supporting me during this busy time hopefully we will be back up to full strength soon and continue to serve our members with all their golfing needs.

Golf on Tour

Westwood and Fitzpatrick taste glory

The season-ending DP World Tour Championship lived up to expectations over the weekend, delivering an incredible tournament with the European Tour’s best golfers battling it out until the final hole. In the end, it was Matthew Fitzpatrick who won the event and took home a cool $3 million for a second time, paring his final hole after a nervy bogey at the 17th to win by one.

But it wasn’t just a one-off event. The Dubai-based finale also saw the Race to Dubai – the tour’s order of merit - come to a close. For much of the week, it looked as though Patrick Reed would secure the title and be the first American to do so. However, after Fitzpatrick’s blistering start on Sunday, he was in pole position. Yet, come to the 72nd hole, it was a certain Mr Lee Westwood who went on to celebrate his third order of merit title at the age of 47.

A fantastic achievement. Maybe his Ryder Cup career isn’t over just yet?

Making practice fun

For the Tour players, money is made around the greens. For most golfers, it’s where you can make sure your playing partner is buying the drinks afterwards. Either way, that’s where the game faces come out.

The drill

This is all about being consistent. You’re going to place nine golf balls (or less if you’re short on time) around the practice green and aim to make ’par 18’ by getting up and down in two with every ball.

Challenge yourself – drop the ball from shoulder height for a variety of lies to mirror the course!

The objective

The two main takeaways from this are consistency and calmness. Keep plugging away until you get there because you won’t get it straight away (if you do, I’ll be booking lessons with you).

Once you’ve managed to get through to six or seven, you’ll be feeling the pressure!
